Civil Engineer graduated from the Escuela de Ingeniería de Antioquia, with a Master’s Degree in Economics from the Universidad de los Andes and a Ph.D. in Economics from the University of California San Diego (United States).
He has been the dean of the School of Economics of the Universidad de los Andes, professor at that same university, Deputy Director of the National Planning Department, Deputy Director and researcher of Fedesarrollo, and researcher of the Inter-American Development Bank and the Colombian Coffee Growers Federation.
Likewise, he was an op-ed columnist at El Espectador newspaper and member of that paper’s editorial committee, as well as of the boards of directors of Bancolombia and Isagén.
He was awarded the Premio Portafolio to the Best professor for his teaching activities and earned the Simón Bolívar Journalism Award for his op-ed columns.
Mr. Gaviria has served as Minister of Health and Social Protection since September 2012, position in which he was ratified at the beginning of President Santos’ second term in office.
