The FARC will have every guarantee to dissent, but without weapons: President Santos

“Our Armed Forces are prepared to assume and manager peace or to carry on with the war”, the Head of State said.

Bogotá, July 9, 2015 (SIG).

During the transfer of authority ceremony to the new Commanders of the Colombian Army, Navy and Air Force, President Juan Manuel Santos stated that if the FARC lay down their weapons, if they stop their violence, they will have every guarantee to dissent, to engage in politics.

“I am telling them that we will actually provide all guarantees and, who will look after them? Here we have our Armed Forces; they are the ones who will provide guarantees to all the Colombian people for their right to dissent, their right to engage in politics”, the President said during this event held today at the José María Córdova Military Cadet School in Bogotá.

The Head of State claimed that that is what the peace process is about; the chance for them “to continue engaging in politics with all constitutional and democratic guarantees, but without weapons, without violence, without war, not more or not less”.

He reiterated that this is the only viable road. “If they understand that this is the path, they are welcome. And if they don’t understand that this is the road, we will continue fighting, as we have been doing, but victoriously, as has been the case”.

The Head of State said the “the Armed Forces are prepared for one or the other”.

“You may rest assured, dear soldiers of land, sea and air, dear policemen, that peace is your victory and the victory of all the Colombian people, and that we are going through fundamental, crucial moments, to define that future. And you, and that is what I want to say to the people of Colombia, may have the peace of mind that, whichever decisions are made, our Armed Forces are at their best moment today, our Armed Forces are prepared to assume and manage peace or to carry on with the war”, the President of the Republic concluded.
